Show that you are an essential asset to the company that you're working for. But, companies are always looking for those employees that are willing to go the extra mile to make sure that they are contributing positively to their workplace. Depending on the industry that you are in, you will need to find your own ways of excelling at your job and showing that there are few out there that can do it as well as you can.
Always show that you're willing and able to learn new things at work. If you're working with an engineering firm that builds supplies for vacuum truck services or are working for a financial company, there are likely courses and things that people in higher positions have and know that you do not. You could ask to take some additional courses to beef up your credentials or volunteer to take on projects that will get you more experience. A promotion usually means that you will have more responsibility. So, you need to show that you can handle it and that you deserve it.
Let your bosses know that you're interested in better positions when and if they become available. If you survey every woodworking machinery plant to banks across America than you will likely find out that the majority of jobs in higher positions go to people who are already working for that firm. That means that in order to get promoted, those hiring need to know that you're interested. And if there are not opportunities within the company that you're currently working for than you might want to think about starting somewhere new. You could relocate or start a home based business to get further ahead with your business plan.
