Retail sales is an extremely flexible industry that meets the job needs of millions of people in the United States. To work in retail sales, you usually don't need to have any previous job experience. If you've took English as a second language in Canada and got a passing grade and you're friendly with customers, it should take you very little time to find a position in retail sales.
On the Internet
There are dozens of websites devoted to job listings. It's important to look through multiple sites, as there is no central database of open jobs. One position at the franchise of Recumbent Bike Toronto might be advertised on Monster but not on Hot Jobs. You should also check the websites of major retailers like Wal-Mart and Macy's, as they will generally have their own online listings of open positions across the country. This is an especially good way of finding higher level managerial and administrative jobs in the retail industry.
In the Paper
Even franchise stores are usually owned or at least managed locally, so managers will often choose to keep the job search local as well by printing the notice in the locally distributed paper. So buy the Arkansas Times every day and scour it. Who knows, next to the ad for local caterers, BBQ Toronto may have a small box advertising an open sales position. Start with the classifieds then work your way through the ad clusters in the rest of the paper.
In the Store
Sometimes store managers don't even need to put an ad in the paper to find new employees. Often all they need to do is put a sign in the store window advertising "Help Wanted" and applicants will come to them. Therefore when you go to pick up your instantaneous water heater at the Park Plaza Mall or the McCain Mall, take an extra few minutes to tour the entire mall, paying particular attention to the shop windows and looking for signs on the checkout counters.
If there are no positions open that you can find or you think your previous job operating an industrial mixer makes you a particularly good fit for a store that isn't currently hiring, you can also drop off a resume with the manager and ask her to keep it on file. Retail stores have high turnover rates and it's very likely she will have a position for you in a few weeks or months.
